Mille anni devono essere una bella età per un comune! Ed Ischitella sta per compierli, senza contare quel che c’era prima della sua nascita ufficiale.Ma il visitatore che decidesse di inerpicarsi fin quassù, non si aspetti di trovare resti di antiche vestigia o aree archeologiche (che pure vi sono sul Gargano, visto che le sue origini si confondono con l’alba del tempo).
Ischitella - che sarebbe stata in origine una fortezza sveva e che ha dato i natali ad uno dei più importanti giuristi italiani, Pietro Giannone - racconta la sua storia millenaria attraverso alcune testimonianze che fanno bella mostra di sè, nel centro abitato e poco fuori. Le antiche mura cingevano un tempo il borgo antico ed ora sono visibili solo in parte. Entrando nel suo ventre antico vi imbatterete in “Terra Vecchia”, caratteristica per il suo groviglio di stradine strette ed angoli fascinosi, che racchiudono secoli di vita e di storia, i suoi bei palazzi antichi, il castello del ‘600, il convento sul cui selciato spicca il clamoroso albero con le radici al posto delle foglie... e la chiesa romanica di Sant’Eustachio. Poco fuori sarà possibile far visita ai resti di una antica Abbazia, quella di San Pietro in Cuppis.
Ischitella con Vico del Gargano e Rodi Garganico rappresenta, il triangolo di una produzione agrumicola che a parte la Sicilia ha pochi eguali in Italia. Ciò è possibile non solo grazie al clima ma alla ricchezza di sorgenti che ne favoriscono le colture.

One thousand years are a considerable age for a Commune! Ischitella is going to be one thousand, without reckoning what it was before its official birthday. But the visitor who should decide to climb up here, can’t expect to find the ruins of ancient vestiges or archaeological areas (which really exist in Gargano as its origins go back to the dawning of civilitazion).
Origins
Ischitella- which must have been a Swabian fortress from the beginning and which has been the birthplace of one of the most renowned Italian jurist, Pietro Giannone – tells its one-thousand-year-old history through picturesque proofs, in the built-up area and a little bit outside. One its ancient walls surrounded the original village but at present they are only partially visible.
Art and Culture
Wandering in its ancient belly you will run into “Terra Vecchia” (Old Land), which is characteristic for the tangle of narrow little streets and charming corners, which contain centuries of life and history, its beautiful ancient buildings, its ancient castle dating back to the seventieth century, the convent on whose pavement the spellbinding tree stands out with roots instead of leaves… and St. Eustace Romanesque Church.
A little outside you can visit the ruins of St. Peter in Cuppis old Abbey. Ischitella together with Vico del Gargano and Rodi Garganico represents the triangle of a citrus fruit growing which is matchless all over Italy, with the exception of Sicily.
